WWF-India | June 2024

Introduction
WWF-India has been providing a unique technological solution to rural milk collection centers—instant milk chillers powered by solar energy. They sought to tell a story about these interventions, their mechanism, as well as their demonstrated and potential large-scale impact.
Having received 400+ pages of reports, presentations, and white papers, we set out to transform technical information into a data story that is visually compelling and engaging.
The Brief
As part of a climate solutions partnership with HSBC, WWF-India has been piloting several nature-based solutions across the country. By demonstrating the mechanisms and impact of their work thus far, they sought to work on policy and finance with government institutions and other key stakeholders to scale up their solutions.
To do so, it was prudent to showcase their work, the science behind each nature-based solution, and the impact through engaging visual stories.
Approach
Prior to the design phase, we focused solely on research. After conversations with WWF's project lead and scientists, we went through reports, white papers, and other literature to start storyboarding.
We decided to begin the story by introducing readers to the sheer scale of India's milk production, the dairy cold chain, and its associated emissions and energy consumption. We then walk readers through the entire dairy supply chain and the mechanism of WWF's instant milk chillers through scrollytelling experiences.
The story ends by attesting to the positive impact of this intervention, showcasing real bills from a study site and an interactive calculator that simulates the large-scale impact of installing these chillers at scale.

The Result
Our data story makes use of thoughtfully crafted graphics to take readers on an immersive journey through an otherwise lacklustre technical topic.
By blending charts, illustrations, and interactive components to contextualise nuances about the challenge and WWF's solutions, the story is made engaging to both public audiences and key stakeholder that WWF hopes to work with for large-scale implementation. Shortlisted for the Information is Beautiful Awards 2024, under the category "Science, Technology & Health."
